Floor Restorer and Terracotta
Choosing terracotta is straightforward enough but make sure it’s installed by an expert.
We can strip back existing terracotta flooring and re-apply linseed and wax or modern synthetic waxes and finishes.
As some stones and finishes are better suited to high traffic areas, we offer a consultancy service to help you choose the right type of floor for particular parts of your home or business.
History and uses
Terracotta is Italian for “baked earth” and is a type of earthenware, a clay-based ceramic. It has been used throughout history for sculpture and pottery as well as for bricks and roof tiles. In ancient times, terracotta was dried in the sun after being formed. Later, it was placed in the ashes of open hearths to harden, and finally kilns were used.
Very popular on the continent, terracotta tiles are often handmade and square in shape. They come in many different colours and finishes and are hard wearing when maintained correctly, which traditionally was with linseed and beeswax. Untreated terracotta though is notoriously porous and prone to marking.
